Show THEATRICAL. What Watt Done Dnrlns the Week and Who OUl It. Lower Prices Pro I nee Larger I&ecclptM. New York, 15. Theatrical business busi-ness has improved the past week and the season is now fairly opend. Au authority on tho subject sayu the season outside of New York has been unexceptionally successful, but that the public here have been utterly demoralized by bad performances, and if it were not for the Btrangers in town the houses would be compelled to close. This state of afl'airs is attributed at-tributed to forced runs to affect the provinces, the wholesale papering of houses, and immoral shows of the "Pink Dominos" class. Another reason given is the high prices. "The Danites drew more in one week at the Grand Opera house at $1 admission than at the Broad ivny in three weeks at $1.50. Lester aliack plays "Roae-dale" "Roae-dale" there next week ot the re duced price. Sovoral theatrical combinations which left here at the opening of the senaon have proved failures, and most of the members are now seeking engagements hero. The latest is that of (Jay lor 'a Nonpariel company, with Jenny Hughes as star. Gaylor says the company refused re-fused to accompany him, while Jennie asserts that Gaylor deserted tho company and neglected to pay the salaries. The latest successful productions aro "False Shame" at Waliack's, with Montague, John Gilbert and Holland, Rose Coghlan, il'me. Poncsi and MUs Boniface in the principal joles, and tho "Lady of Lyons" at the Fifth Avenue, with Marie Anderson as Paulina, Eben Ply mp ton as Claude Mclnotte. Miss Anderson rapidly gains in public favor. The critics now speak in the highest terms of her as an artist. She did not impress the critics so favorably on the first night because of uprvousnesa. Miss Anderson is yet in her teens. A new play, "The Mother's Secret," an adoption of Sardon's "Seraphioe," has also made a hit, and it is likely to have a good run. Many leading theatres recently abandoned the use of hill boards as a costly and useless means of advertising. advertis-ing. It is stated that Madame Mod-jeska Mod-jeska will appear at the Fifth Avenue theatreou the 1st ol January. Thos. Maguire has e n't c ted an engagement with the Fryer grand opera company for a season of Bix weeks in San Francisco, beginning in January. The Williamsons bad good business al Cleveland this w;tk, and open in Pittsburg on Monday. John McCul-lough McCul-lough has been playing at Baltimore this week. John T, Raymond's new play, "dolden Calf," had fine success ladt nigkt in Albany. |
