Show SAM GARY TO THE WORKING-MEN. WORKING-MEN. In a speech to a street congregation 1 of hungry workingmen in Cincinnati 1 recently, Gen. Sam Gary Baid: There are not 100 men in Cincinnati in legitimate legiti-mate business who are paving expenses to-day. Tho bondholders and the bankers havo got control of the property and labor of the country. I wish I could see a way out, hull can not. 1 bud hoped that oneof the s political parties would propose a way out, but neither of them would do it. I bad hoped that the democratic pirty, at ot. LouiB, would favor the H repeal of tho resumption act, and wipe out the national bank circulation applause), and proclaim, "Lot the government issue enough money to pay the debts of the country and transact the business of the country." The democratic pnrly failed to do it, t and they adopted about the saino platform as the republican party, and that can't and don't repeal the resumption re-sumption act. 1 see nothing but bankruptcy fur our business men, starvation for the workiug classes, repudiation for the government, and Q finally revolution. I am frank and outspoken and candid. I have been in favor for years, and toiling and struggling in the interests of the working classes. Some of you know j I have done it, at the expense of my popularity. I would not now go across the street to save either of the political parties from perdition, unless I Baw that it had something in its ; principles to relieve the working classes. But to-day I can't advise you; I don't know what to advise you. A man said to me. Whal'B the matter of these people? They can get calico at four cents a yard to-day." Aye, but where to get the four cents. Ue said, "They cau get a loaf of bread for a nickel." Yea, but where to get the nickel. There are a million and a half of mon in this country ready to labor, aud they can't sell their labor. I know an instance of a man who has a wife and four children. He can't get work. Said this man: "What was a good negro worth in the south, in slavery?" He was answered, an-swered, "About $1,200." And he spoke up, and sayg he, "Well, 1 can do as much work ns any negro. 11 you will give me $oO0 now for my wife and children I will enter into a contract to Berve you faithfully to the end of my life." Sam Cary in as wild as ever; still 1 there is more truth than poetry in his st ali-mcn Ls, but his remedies 1 would but aggravate the disease. |
