Show 1'ublic Tliflvcs lu Culil'oruin. ' S.m Francisco, 27. Some weeks ago tho burning of tho court house of Monterey county at Salinas was telegraphed. Investigations wince conducted con-ducted by tho local authorities with the- aid ol a San Francisco detective show that the building was fired for the purpose of destroying tho records and covering a defalcation in the tax collector's office amounting to about $20,000. It is proven to a reasonable certainty that most of the money has been gambled ofl by William Kumsey, the deputy collector, and that a number of prominent citizens of Salinas, including" certain county officials, have been winning it. Collector 51. A. Castro, has resigned. Kumsey has been locked up awaiting await-ing examination, and several prominent promi-nent citizens have been arrested for complicity in tho matter. The detectives de-tectives intimate that a Btrong ring exists among the county officials and other members, which has been plundering the public for a long time and that many of the officials have been doing everything in their power lo defeat the ends of justice, including County Judge Webb. The rings have a uumber ot desperate characters charac-ters in tneir interest ready to further their purposes, either by perjury or violence. There ia great excitement among tho citizens, who intend to use every legal means to bring the1 ; ofienders to justice. |
