Show CENTENNIAL SUGGESTIONS. Guv. Baghy, of .Michigan,- issued an address to the people ol his state, on the 22d inst., in which, after expressing ex-pressing a fear that we are growing thoughtless of our country, its institutions institu-tions and government, and careless of its perpeluiiy, he makes these practical practi-cal suggestions; "We, of Michigan, nerd todo our duty in this direction, and wo cannot commence too loon. The history of the United States is not taught in 5.00J of the 6,000 schools of the states. It occurs to me that thib is not Ihe way to insure good citizenship citizen-ship in the future. If our children arc thus educated or rather uneducated uned-ucated we shall by and by become a nation of doubters and croakers. I hope the parents and children, the ollicers and sobool teachers of this stale will see to it that this be changed at once. If from the inspiration of the time this single- reform shall be secured, the Centennial will indeed prove a blessing. On Saturday, the loth day ot April next, I urge upon every citizen ol this state who owns a a piece o( God's ground wlu-ther it be large or Email, whether in cily or country, town or village to plant ; tree, that our children und our children's chil-dren's children may know and re member us the tree planted by patriotic patri-otic bands in the first Contemn d year oflhc republic. In a country o( land owners, where the poorest man may, il ho will, own the ground ho stands on, this seems a most appropriate memorial acl, and I earnestly hope our peoplo will hearlly unite inadupt-ing inadupt-ing this suggestion. Iam will aware that these are perhaps only eymbols external show but will they not bespeak an inward clow of patriotic impulse, and may they not set in motion in the plastic minds o( our youth and perchanco of elder folk a current ol patriotism and love of country that shall know no ebb? Let us now resolve to cherish the legacies of free school, free ohureb, free press, anil free town-meeting left us by the fathers. Let ua preserve simplicity . und economy of government as cardinal points in our political creed, and thus make Bure 'that under Uud, government of tho people, by the p-o-ulc, and for the people, shall not perish per-ish from the earth.'
