Show WASHINGTON. SecrfUiry ditiiiiller lielore the f-jl actions Committee. Washington, - Z. Chandler, secretary of the interior, called by the house committee on powers and privileges, produced tae papers relating re-lating to the resignation and application applica-tion for reappointment of Orlando H. Browstcr, Louisiana elector. He said he supposed Brewster's letter of resignation dated November 4th was received November loth or 16th. He did not know whether he received it from the president or not. Did not know it was antedated, and was not aware that Brewster bad testified himself, lie wrote it November 14th. It is the practice of the department to accept resignations as of time-past, time-past, if tendered in that manner. Question Was not the application past duted in this instance to enable him to be ineligible as an elector? Answer Not that I know. I did not even know that he was a candidate. Wm. U. Green, colored assistant secretary of the Louisiana senate, and former minute clerk of the returning board, wub examined at length, but the result was that he does not know ot any alterations of returns by any clerk or member of the board, or by their direction. Had no knowledge of any paper being burnt; knowa of no clerk making affidavit-!, and J id not hear of anything of the k;n while the board was in session. The changing of returns from Vernon parish was one of those mysterious things which witness cannot explain. |
