Show GEMEXXiAL RIFLE SHOOT. America Tells Euclnnd to I'iek a Team t Salt Uerseli nuit tome Aloug. New York, 17. Sir Henry Hal-ford, Hal-ford, a noted English rifleman, has been for some time past earnestly engaged in organizing an English team of twelve to be one of the many European ones expected to compete in the United States, during the Centennial Cen-tennial against the American team of equal numbers. That an Irish team would appear on the scene bad been practically Bettled. A Scotch one was expected, while there are good reasons to believe that a rifle team will be here from France, Belgium, Germany, and probably Italy. This cable dispatch was received to-day, which puts the matter in a new light: "London, 17. To Colonel Gilder-sleeve: Gilder-sleeve: Directors resolutions alter the conditions named by us, namely; Great Britain and Ireland vs. America. Amer-ica. The council met on Friday. I am sure they will not sustain the teams. Sir Henry Halford." America's reply: "New York, 17. To Sir Henry Halford: Any team you organize will be accepted, English, Scotch, Irish, or mixed. (Signed) Gildersleeve." |
