Show The Xew York Herald's l.vst presidential presi-dential estimate gives the democrats thirty-one statcB with 172 electoral votes, and the republicans fifteen states with 162 electoral votes, leaving leav-ing out Xew York slate with its twenty-live electoral votes, for the purpose of showing that neither party has any chance of success without the state of Xew York, which will turn the scale and decide tho contest. The chief problem to be solved in the approaching contest is what candidate candi-date has the best chance of carrying Xew York. In the democratic table is placed Colorado, Indiana, and Xevada, which are all doubtful, and it is not certain that Colorado will get in her vole in season to be counted this year. On the other hand Ohio and Illinois are given to (he republicans, republi-cans, but both of these are entitled to bt placed among the doubtful states. Xew York is certainly an important element in the election, but hardly more so than the central states of Ohio and Indiana, and with Judge Davis as a candidate the republicanism republican-ism of Illinois would be Beverely tested. |
