Show KELIUI0U3 TOLERATION. It has recently been brought to light that Charleston, Maes., has nevor yet paid for the destruction of the Uaulitie convent in August, 1 1S:!4, by an anti-Catholic mob. The i ruins ot tliis building still remaiu, we beliavo, as a lcaaon to religious and ' political fanatics to practico toleration 1 of opinion in a country where all i faiths and creeds are theoretically i pormitlcd to worship without moles- tation. The destruction of the con- vent alluded to was brought about by a similar species of tactics to thoso which arc occasionally employed by J ignorant or sensational newspaper writers to inflame the public mind in royartl to Utah. These people either do not know or aro entirely careless of the possible ellecta of such incendiary incen-diary publications. Thoughtless religious re-ligious fanatics, preachers, and moralists laid the train which caused the destruction of the Ursuline convent con-vent in Massachusetts, just as fanatics of the same character ioatigattd violent and murderous attacks against the "Mormons" in Missouri and Illiuoia. It is impossible to estimate , the depth and breadth of such 1 thoughtless or cruel fanaticism, when fully arouBcd. Happily, the world is I yearly growing out of this intolerance and persecution, and a spirit of catholicity and conservatism ia becoming be-coming paramount. Tho majority of tin Aaiericau people havo learned that the toleration of all opinions, which is the corner-stone of our admirable constitution, rather than the persecution cf any, is the surest moans to promote and develop the j truth. |
