Show NO CHINESE CIVILIZATION. The anti-Chinese meeting at Union hill, Su Francisco, on Wednesday evening, was attended by at least 10,000 people, and presided over by Governor Irwin. Kesolutions were adopted appealing to congress for relief against the Chinese evil, and for the appointment of a delegation to Washington to present the question in full and urge immediate action. All the speeches were ot a peaceful character, deprecating violence. The police are protecting the Chinese quarter. Great alarm has been exhibited by this class, who have made large purchases of weapons recently, but everything wa3 quist during the meeting. The Chinese as a race question is at last on the point of being solved, alter a prolonged and practical trial. The American people have proven themselves them-selves capable of absorbing the subjects sub-jects of every European nationality, converting them mainly into good citizens of the republic. They are even meeting with some success in disposing in one way or another of the African race in a peaceful manner. But the Chinese people present a complete barrier in all respects to any fusion politically, religiously or socially; nor do they move on parallel para-llel lines with Ihe European races in progressive civiiiz ition. American habits and morals do not appear tc have the slightest effect upon theii ideas or modes of life. The Chinese quarter of San Francisco is believed to be a model of all Chinese cities, with all the vile practices, the heathenish devices, and degrading morals of the lower classes of that nation at home. iiin!y the poorer , classes come here and as the agents of the six companies say, they i come like an avalanche; no orders ( or expostulations can prevent t China from sending her sur- : plus millions to America, while ' our capitalists clamor for cheap labor and can procure it in abundance aimply by signing a contract for the services of a certain number of orientals. orien-tals. The real question for our government gov-ernment to decide is as to the servile character of this enrgratiou, and there seems to oe no doubt that a class of C.iitipse are practically bought and sold, and are at the disposal dis-posal of speculators as much as the negroes were in this country before the war. If tho Chinese could come here as Englishmen and Germans and Irishmen cooie, of their own Tolition, the evil could not reach great proportions; bjt their wholesale whole-sale importation like cattle at the instance of middle-men and speculators specu-lators becomes eimply another form of servitude, which is contrary to the spirit of our laud. If these people cannot be made intelligent American citizens, they must remain Chinese, and as there is no reasonable probability proba-bility of a limit to the numbers which can be imported, it would not be a ditlicult matter for them to overrun, first California, driving out the whites, then spreading eastward, in process of time practically occupying the entire country. With a population of 400,-000,000 400,-000,000 to draw from the sum of the yearly emigration would become only a question of demand for cheap labor and of the capabilities of ocean transportation. Sooner or later tho fight would have to be made against this invasion by a race which has no sentiments in common with the people who have settled thw country and established its institutions. California Cal-ifornia proposes to open the ball now in order to stop this influx, or keep it within moderate- limit), and she will , have the sympathy and aid of the industrial in-dustrial classes throughout the Union in this eflort. j After all the philanthropic senti j Jnent and philosophy brought out by the republican party in regard U the brotherhood and equality of mankind, the country has bicn taught by experience ex-perience that'raco nllinities and prejudices pre-judices are deeply ingrained in hurnnn nature, and that there are natural and acquired barriers which present insurmountable obstacles to tho co-miuglinc co-miuglinc of certain races on Utuis of equality and with advant igeous results. The ;nuid superstructure) which the revululion of 1SG0 s--t up ' on the plan of an Americau-Afric natioiiiiaty is not yet established on aj firm baiis, nnd it is doubtful whether: it will stand tho test of time; but tho experience of ui FrancUco as a semi-, Mongolian town will be generally ro-; garded as a eignM failv.ro. |
