Show Junlico lEriMlley tiie I5iii I'oiniuiissioiior. Washington, 30. Associato Justices Jus-tices Clitlurd, Strong, Miller and Field designated by the electoral bill as four members of the judicial branch of the commission, were in secret conference two or three hours to day, but adjourned without ariving at a determination as to which one of their associates should bo selected as the fifth member. It is considered certain, howover, that to-morrow morning, very soon after they reas-serublo, reas-serublo, they will select justice Bradley Brad-ley as the fifth member, and promptly communicate to both houses of con gress, there being sufficient reason to believe he would have boeu selected to-day had it been authoritatively ascertained prior to the adjournment adjourn-ment of the conference that Justice Davis would positively decline the position if ofiered to him. It is conjectured con-jectured that the embarrassment of the consultation, to day, arose mainly, if not entirely, from conflicting accounts ac-counts aa to the willingness of Justice Davis to ecrve upon the commission, which were not set at rest until after the conference had formally ended for the day. It is currently believed, although of course tho statement cannot can-not bo made upon authority, that one or more ballots were cast to day for Justice Davi3, under the belief entertained enter-tained by a portion of those present, that although he had expressed a disinclination dis-inclination to aorve upon the commission, com-mission, he would nevertheless accept the position if chosen. |
