Show TRADE DOLLAR SCARE. One of tho reasons as-igned fur the present heavy decline in silver coin is the multiplication of trade dollars, and their introduction into the channels chan-nels of circulation here. We presume it never entered the minds of those who framed the amendment to the mint laws authorizing these coins that any of them would ever bo circulated in the United States. We know it was looked upon as a convenient and popular way of exporting our surplus silver bullion; and therefore only a nominal charge was fixed for coining the same. Gold becoming a little scarce and silver bullion difficult of sale, except at a heavy discount, some of our large silver producers conceived the idea of haying it coined! into trade dollars to meet the monthly expenses of mines for supplies and waues. In this way this coin has assumed a prominent place iu the fractional currency of the state and coast. Tho prejudice which first existed against the coin, and which was largely due to the action of the hankers in refusing to take it on deposit, is faBt disappearing as its intrinsic value becomes be-comes known. The dies for the trade dollar arrived at Carson and San Franciaco simultaneously about the 1st of Julv. 1873. but thn fnm.w ' mint claims the honor of making the ; first coin from them. We have no 'data at hand showing the amount since turned out by the Carson mint, I which, next to San Francisco, has been the principal factor. Tho amount coined at the miut in this Icily and exported to foreign markets has been as follows since the commencement com-mencement of operations: Coined. Exported. 1S-3 703,000 &S85.SC0 1574 2,550,00J 3,8lS,300 1575 4,4SC,01)0 4,OSy,700 , 1870 to Fob'ry 1st 3i2,000 182,400 Totals $8,OS1,000 $11,386,200 From tne above it will be seen that we have shipped $1,300,000 more than has been minted here, and whatever surplus we now have is due entirely to the operations at tho Car-' son mint. The occurrence of the Chineso new year restricted tho export ex-port movement this month. It probably prob-ably will bo much larger this month. Gold Hill News. |
