Show j Surgical Operations. On Sunday a very delicate operation opera-tion w&a performed on the person of jMra. E. L. T. Harriaoo, it being the amputation of the left breast. Tae j operation was necessitated by the' growth of a large cancer in the region 1 stated, together with cancerous en-! largement of ail the glands of the armpit. Tbe incision was thirteen inches long. Dr. Benedict performed the operation, assisted by Dra. Smith, 0 inompeon, Williamson, Ormeby, oi Logan, Bane and Mrs. Dr. Pratt. So f far, tbe operation was a success, the t lady feeling very easy and relieved, e and free from pain up to last evening. r She is also in good spirits and able to Bit np. 1 On Monday, another very difficult 3 and dangerous operation was per-i per-i formed by Dr. Benedict at the Sister' i Hospital. This was on a 13-year old boy, a son of Mr. Meakin, of Wanehip, I Tbe 'd euflared from a tumor, of , five months standing, in the upper jaw. The removal of the tumor necessitated the cutting out of Ihe whole side of the right upper jaw, extending ex-tending back to the throat, including tbe bony support oi the eye and the right half of the bony part of the nose, together with all the teeth on the right side. The tumor and the jaw will weigh a quarter of a pound, and notwithstandmg thia fearful extraction extrac-tion there ia less disfigurement than there was before the removal. Up to the time of writing the boy was doing remarkably well, and strange aa it may seem, waa able to speak shortly 1 after the operation bad been con- ; eluded. He will soon recover, and , there will not be a very great disfiure-ment. disfiure-ment. There were present at the operation Dra. LeCompte, post surgeon sur-geon at Fort Douglas, Ormeby, of Logan, Smith, Young, Hamilton, Fowler, Williamson, Thompson, Bane, and Mtb. Dr. Pratt. This operation ia oommonly known as an excision of the superior maxilla, and by the profession called a "capital operation." This is the second time this dangerous operation has been performed in this territory, both times by Dr. Benedict. |
