Show THE HEW ASSOCIATE JUSTICE. Gen. John M. Harlan, tho newly appointed associate justice of the United States supreme court, donned the ermine yesterday, and took a seat ! upon that exalted bench. Gen. Harlan Har-lan succeeds Judge David Davis, and bids fair to detract nothing from the ability, wisdom and purity of tho supreme court. Ho ie a Kentuckian by birth and residence and long held the ollice ol attorney general ol that stato. Ho is an able and conscientious conscien-tious lawyer, his reputation and famo not being confined to hie native Bialo, but extending throughout the land. He has been somewhat mixed up in politics during the last few yearn, but bis honesty and integrity have never Deen quesuoueu; uu he takes upon the bonoh a spotless character which cannot but win for him aud his decisions the respect of foe as well as the adminition of friend. Gen. Harlan is from one of the best Kentucky families, is largo in atalure, baa a geueroua heart, a massive brain, i and a well-trained logal mind. He is capable of groat physical labor aud mental exertion, and tbeBi qualities with an honest heart give promise that his conclusions on the bench will bo the result of a careful application ol tho principles of law and right, and that hia deciaiona will be impatial.
