Show ARTESIAN WELLS. We wero hopeful that tho present spring an effort would be made to thoroughly test the practicability of sinking artesian wells in thia territory. It has never been eettled whether or not such wells can be made a success here. Several attempts in1 that direction have been made, but the parties interested either, soon became be-came discouraged, or ,had not the means to proceed, hence the enterprises enter-prises were abandoned before a fair trial had boen given. We believe in one or two instances small streams of fresh water hava been struck and forced to the surface; but the wells were comparatively shallow, and little beuefit has been derived from them. We again suggest sug-gest that a thorough test be made, aod in tho event of success, of which there can be little doubt, the artesian wells will eoon become an important institution of the territory. The San Francisco Chronicle has this to say on the subject ; Ifthcro is anything that will make the do-serL bios oui it is an artesian well. L"i-perinioi.tt L"i-perinioi.tt hnve beeu madu recently in Alerced and Sunilaus counties with a vitiw to ascertaining whether or not there aro any subterranean streams of water underl.i ing that valley. These experiments experi-ments have proved highly successful, aud at least a dozen flowing streams are now in operation in tooso two counties, ilessr;. Pike and Stone hare sunk wells near ilio o.d town of Dover, and at a dapth of 3i0 feet found a strong llowiog nrcam. It has preisuro onougti to f'jrco water tbir:y feet into the air. A numbor of other geafe-men geafe-men have succeeded in finding good Uow-iti(? Uow-iti(? streams. Artesian wells are better for irngHtinjt purpoes than any canal which could ba brouuht on the ground, because every turn owns and controls his own water source, and has do secondary di.ehes to repair, no Iodr line of canal to pay for, nor djos he hive to wait till hi turn comes. Prospering f-r artesian wo!U, where tbo water lies from 300 to XiO feet below the surface, should bo continued, and it would he an excollent idea fur ut-igtibors lo join together and .'hare iho expense of sinking one well, and let tee owner of iho (round on which it U sunk, in ce water is found, Ihv the entire expenses and take the well. |
