Show j GENERAL. lee lor Hie Colorado Desert. Washington, 23. Gen. Charles P. 'Stone, writing from Ciro, Eypt, to Gen. LeDuc, says: "From what I have seen of the date-producing what I know ol the desert of the Colorado, Colo-rado, Oairsa Croefc and Fort Yuma, I am inclined to behave the greater portion of the latter regioo ran be made productive and very valuable by making plantations of date palms This tree not only uoea not require much water, but water is prejuaicial to it, and the climate of the Colorado is singularly like that of some of the1 best date-producing districts here. In any case, I feel assured that all the new river portion of the Colorado desert would grow the date tree without with-out difficulty. |
