Show j "Pittaiuro I There was a very :;n j audience at the Theatre la si evening, ou the occasion occa-sion of the reproduction of "Pioa-I "Pioa-I fore" with Miss Sherwin as Josephine. Joseph-ine. The most noticeable feature of the performance wa3 the much greater animation and business on tbe part of the crew, which fiiled up so much better than before. Tbe scene and details of tho Bhip were also better, and the trained marines, with tDe comical drill, consituted quite an attraction in themselves. Miss Sherwin, as Josephine, gave an entire'y new idea of tbe mueio, and having repeatedly played the part, of couree ber busiuess wa? much better than tbat of the ladieo wbo have previously attempted tbe character. "Home, Sweet Home," sung in tbe second act, was received with deafening applause. The other parts were well sustained, all ot tbem Bhowing new features. Dick Deadeye, in make up, was original and good, but there is a vast difference between making fun and acting. A bufloon can create laughter, but it takes a good actor to cause intelligent mirth. Mr. McCurdy'B conception of Deadeye did not strike us as being apt or fitting. Mr. Stevens did not do as well as Captain Corcoran as did Mr. Young, and was not expected to, nevertheless his conception was generally good. The other leading characters have been mentioned before, be-fore, and all seemed to have improved last evening. The matinee will take place at 2.30 o'clock this afternoon, bo that business busi-ness persons may havo an opportunity of attending with their families. Tbe marines will greatly amuse the little ones. |
