Wade'B o-r-IgumciiLH before tho house Pacific railroad committee in favor of giving aid to tho Northern Pacific railroad. 1st, That the pending measure virtually vir-tually surrenders back to the people the largest aud best grant congress ever made, by requiring it to be returned re-turned to the government aud the agricultural ag-ricultural portion to be sold to settlers at $2.50 an acre, while lands thus far sold by the company have brought $5 per acre. 2d, The bill, instead of aiding to establish a monopoly of trans-continental trallic, renders a monopoly and exorbitant through tariffs forever impossible, by reserving to congress the right to lii and regulate all lares and tolls. 3d, That the company shall finish and equip the road with private means, that tho company shall give the government a first mortgage on iU entire property, surrender actual possession of lauds, pledge the net revenues from the land sales and traffic traf-fic earningB.and in addition deposit a fund of 510,000 per mile as security for a government guarantee of 5 per cent, hiibrcot rui a lerm or years on the reasonable cost of the road, the principal not to be guaranteed. |
