Be it ordained by the City Council of Salt Lake City; That any person in this city, First, Who either keeps a bouse of ill-fame reeorted to for tbe purpose ot prostitution or lewdness; or wilfully resides in such house; or resorts thereto for lewdness; Second, Who is the owner of any building or tenement, the whole or any oait cf which is hhpH fnr ano r the purposes mentioned iu the first subdiviaion of this Bection; or has control con-trol of such building or tenement as agent, guardian, or lessee of such owner, or as tbe agent ol such guardian guard-ian or lessee, and after notioe of such improper use ot bucu building or ten ement shall fail to suppress the Bame by removing therefrom the occupants thereof; or Third, Who lets any building or tenement knowing that the lessee iu tends using the same, or any part thereof, for any of the purposes mentioned in tne nrat subdivision of this section; or harbors or keeps about his or her private premises any whoremaster, strumpet or whore, knowing the same to bo guilty of following fol-lowing a lewd course of life therein; Shall be liable, for each offence, to a fine in any sum not exceeding ninety-nine dollars, or to imprisonment imprison-ment for any terra not exceeding one hundred days; or to both such fine and imprisonment. SliO. 2. It shall be lawful, on the trial of any person charged with either of the ofleuces named in the preceding preced-ing section, for the prosecution to in troduce in Bupport of such charge, testimony of the general character and reputation ol the person or plaoe, touching tbe oflence or charge set forth in the complaint, aud the defendant de-fendant may likewise resort to testimony testi-mony of a like nature for the purpose of dittproviog such charge. Sec. 3. Iu prosecutions under the second subdiviaion of Section one of this ordinance it shall bo a sufficient defense if the defendant shows at the trial that be has diliuntly used the power which the law gives him to suppress tbe improper use of the building or tenement ooncerning which tho charge is made.
