All t-.e newspaper offices, banks, telegraph offices, Harding's opera house, postoffice, Universah'st church and ah tne hotels but one,' and nearly all tho business portion ol the city is gone. It is utterly impossible impos-sible to estimate the loss. Two men have been killed by falling walls, flie city is in the wildest state oi frenzy. The fire is now under control. con-trol. The burnt district is nearly a mile square. SECOND DISPATCH. 10 p m. The fire broke out this f afternoon in Morgan & Bros', saw mill, burning that and a dozen other '" saw mills and shingle mills on Sawdust Saw-dust avenue, and millions of lumber, hundreds of houses, all the printing 1 offices, Harding's opera house, the Beckwith and Adams hotels. The 1 burnt district is one and a half miles I long and 'half a mile wide. Three f lives are reported lest. Hundreds of families are home'e.-s. Nearly all the c business boosts are burned, includ- 1 ing all the banks. There is not a dry 1 k'oids store stan ing n the north " side now. It is impossible to give l I the loss to-night. The fire commenced com-menced at Oie corner of Pino and Marun streets and spread east and r.onheajt thiough Hancock, Pearl, Warren and High streets, destroying the depot of Hit; St. Paul railway, and proceeding to Main street where the principal business are located; and extending in the north hue of the above limits, southeasterly across 5th, : Mangoo and Oitcr Htieets to Cape street, the south line being the river ' with the excep.ion of a block or two about the foot of Main street. Two lives are known to be lest. Thieves are in possession of the city and special spe-cial policemen have been detailed to prevent depredations. |
