Show j THE KW GOVZENOS OF UTAH. j I The telegraph announces the nomination nom-ination yesterday as governor of Utah, of Samuel B. Axtell, of California, Cali-fornia, by President Grant, which will be quite a surprise, aa Mr. A.'s name has not heretofore been mentioned men-tioned in connection with the office. Mr. Aitell was born in Franklin county, Ohio, October 4th, 1S19, and so ia now 55 years of age. He graduated at the Western Reserve college, studied and practiced law; emigrated to California in 1851; and was elected on the democratic ticket, with Governor Haignt, to the 40th congies?, and re-elected to the 41st. Until the last presidential election he always acted with the democratic party; but as between Greeley and Grant he took an active and decided part for Gen. Grint. In congress he was noted for his conservatism, and in California was regarded as a sound man. The Herald welcomes him to his new post, and shall gladly commend com-mend auch of his official acts as may be just and wise and show a proper regard for the interests of the terri tory. The office of governor of Utih H not an arduous one, and is pretty fairly paid from the public treasury. It is an honorable posi'.ion.and should le honored liy its incumbent. Gov. Axtell will find here an intelligent, friendly people, who are apt to appreciate appre-ciate men at their true value. Ask-ini; Ask-ini; nothing but justice and right, they strive to render unto Cfflsar the things that be Cseiar's, and to judge ol all men by their acta rather than by their professions. |
