The house naval committee began an investigation of the charges against representative Siowell. A naval cadet, Joseph G. Be.-.ttio, testified that early in 1873 he piiid $1,700 to one Graham, who said he could secure the appointment for that sum, which was needed for party purposes; that he was chairman of the district commit'ee in.StowelPa district, nd that the appointment was in StowelPs hands. The witness did not see Stowell until yesterday, and did. not know him in the afiair at all. .. The house committee on the Pacific railroads were engaged to-day in hearing hear-ing arguments from Ben. Wade and Judge Kice in advocacy of the Northern North-ern Pacific railroad bill, proposing a government, guarantee ot interest, etc' Tbe Pacific Mail investigating committee insist upon keeping secret tbe testimony ol Irwin until tLe examination ex-amination is completed. Irwin's secret testimony acknowledges acknowl-edges that he received th money from the company to influence congress con-gress in favor of an additional bud sidy. Ho positive refuses to give the amounts or to whom paid. His ruling i urpose apparently is to damage dam-age the comobny as far as possible. Hatch openly declares his confidence that he can show that Stockwell or Irwin received the money, but only spent a trifle in Washington. The case of French vs. Edwards, involving the title to 633 acres of the lownsite of Sulterville, California, was argued and submitted in the supreme court to-tlay, congressman Houguton appearing for the plaintiff, and Judga McKune for the defendant. |
