Show Strange Rumors, Last evouing the town was full of indefinite rumors, but like indefinite rumors generally, of course they were without foundation. One story was that Judge McKean had been removed re-moved from the office of chief justice of this territory, and given a foreign position under government. The almost universal exclamation upon hearing this news, was " Thank God 1" Ye do not think any one inquired in-quired whether the expression was one of thank fulness that McKean had been given a better and more lucrative lucra-tive position, or gratitude to the giver of good for bringing about the removal of his honor from Utah. Then there was ireely circulated the story that McKean had been given an "Irish hoist" that ho had been dropped from his elevated position on tho supreme bench to that of U. S. district attorney. The rumor had it that Gov. Woods was coming back here as chief justice, and ho and McKean were to ride rough shod over everything that was "Mormon." Mr. Carey was to be kicked out in the cold and slaughtered, officially, because he was not indicting aud prosecuting tho entire "Mormon" ; community on general principles. When told of this change everyone would say, half in fun half in earnest, earn-est, "Justice Woods, oh, what a judge !" Another rumor was that the federal judges were to be redistricted, and McKean was to be assigned to the Second dis trict, Beaver. Horror oi horrors I This was terrible for the chief justice to contemplate. The very idea of sending his honor on a mission to the smallest district, judicially, ju-dicially, in the territory, seemed like administering heavenly justice on earth. The public reasoned that it was about tho best change for all parties concerned that could be made. It is evident that this district produces pro-duces more litigation than his honor can dispose of while he could without with-out great exertion, attend to the legal business arising in th e Second district. There were other stories afloat regarding re-garding judicial changes in this quarter, quar-ter, but diligent enquiry failed to establish es-tablish their truth. However, they created considerable excitement on the street, and doubtless had the effect desired by the fabricators. |
