Show The cm Kb' jithtiue received a telegram tele-gram from the attorney general yesterday, yes-terday, announcing that Marshal Nelson had "resigned," which was confirmed in the regular press dip. patches received last night. There is a good deal of sarcasm expressed in the word, in view of the circumstances that brought about the resignation. The fact that he has boen in Washington Wash-ington several weeks trying to bold fast to his position, and the frequent assertions of his friends that he was coming out "solid." Those official gentlemen who have taken so much interest in Mr. Nelson, and Bought to bolster him. up at Washington by Ulegraphing and writing to the authorities au-thorities that ho could satisfactorily satis-factorily "explain everything" if given an opportunity to do so, could not please the public and probably the government also any better than by following the commendable example ex-ample set by the late marshal. As a private citizen we think a good deal more of Mr. Nelson than when he was U. S. marshal. We hope to be able to say the aame of BOme ,of bis official friends. But there ia other important matters mat-ters in the dispatch from Gen. Devons to Judge Schaefier. The attorney general Bays no money for the courts here can be made available until after the appointment of a successor to Nelson. He therefore suggests an adjournment for six weeks. What notion hia honor will take in the matter has not developed, but it ia probable the juries at lease will be discharged temporarily, as that branch of the court could hardly be carried on without funds. |
