Show GENERAL SUTTElt. Tbo rereunial National Bk-sar. Bk-sar. WaBhineton, 21. Representatives Page, Wigginton and Davis, of California, and Wiltshire of Arkansas accompanied General John A. Butter before the house committee on private land claims, today, and advocated lavorable action upon the bill which oroooses to iudemnify him for the loss of bis Mexican grant by a money pay meut ot $50,000. The California representatives' plea for him waa wholly of a sympathetic nature. They argued that although he might not have any legal title to & grant of 90,-000 90,-000 acres which the supreme court pronounced invalid, yet they believed he had equitable rights, and in this connection they relered to the faot that subsequent to its confirmation by the California land commission he was unable to employ needed counsel aud with his imperfect knowledge of our language and customs failed to have his case properly presented to the supreme cOurt. tie had, however, how-ever, been in quiet and peaceable possession until crowded out by Americans. During a long period 6 time he bad rendered great assistance to our military forces, and unbounded generous rolief to incoming settlers out i. f his private meaus. They epoke also of the fact that gold was firm dis covered in California though his instrumentality, in-strumentality, and iu viow of all bis service?, sacrifices aud hardships which had reduced him to a stale ol poverty they thought government owed him a debt ol gratitude, that should incline the committee to give to hia present claim the most favorable favor-able consideration possible. The1 committee subsequently took a vote upon the bill and almust unanimously1 decided to reponitadversoly upon the ground that their powers extended only to the consideration of the question ques-tion whether or not his privaU land claim was valid and that they could not take action in tbo direction ol granting a pension or gratuity. It is potsiblu, therefore, thai this matter may be brought before the committee on claims, but there seems to be 00 prospect whatever ol favorable action upon it by that committee or by either branch of congress. |
