Show CALIFORNIA ELECTION. I Tue Sew York Press Greatly j Interested. New York, 2. Tne Tu.i:s hoj-cs California republicans will elect their governor to-morrow, and two con- ; pressmen, though it tears only one is sale. The Tribune says republicans are 1 confident of electing their candidate tor governor and at least three or lour ! congressmen. It is impossible to i judge at this ditance what effect the DeVoung Kallooh quarrel will have ( upon the vote in San Francisco, but i if it should resuit in placing the city J in tbe control of the republicans, it . will b? an uuexpacttd piece of good fortune. The Herald says it would" seem to be a bad time to elect judges, but tbe average voter in California probably takes comfort in the reflection that Judge Lynch, why is not elected judge, hulis court permanently and may co;ne to the rescue at any time 'is a court of last resort. Alt journals, to-day, morning and eveniug, have editorials on the California Cali-fornia election. Tne Tribune points out the identity of the greenback with socialist theories, and claims I that both sprang from the same root and each aim at legislation legisla-tion against recognized Bocial laws, and facts demonstrated by human i experience. The Times, in a column and a quarter editorial, shows the rise of the labor party in California out of the grasping and indiscreet policy of capitalists and corporations. "Should the next presidential election be thrown into tbe bouse the political complexion of the California delegation delega-tion wculd become a matter of deep concern." Hence the importance with which the California election is regarded in the east. The Evening Pv$t sajs it will settle one of the moit complicated and interesting political contests that ever took place in auy state. The Commercial Bulletin attributes attrib-utes tbe present slate of Bocial ailairs to the neglect of their duties as good citizens, by intelligent and order-loving order-loving Californians, and alleges that tho wild theories of demagogues, apparently in the ascendant there, are due to the course of a certain class who have used their power and privileges in such a manner as to imply that they were not bound to respect any interests but their own. It would be idle to deny that like causes are at work among ourselves to produce like eflects. San Francisco. 2. To-morrow, the stock exchanges and publio institutions institu-tions will be closed unless the election is more one-sided than there is now any reason to expect. It will bo several days before tbe result can be known. In this city the regulations of voting and counting will make it impossible to estimate the result for probably two or three days. Tbe contest between tbe republicans and workingmcn on mayor is likely to be close. On both city and state tickets there will be much scratching. The republicans and workingmen both express confidence con-fidence of victory in the city and stale, while the friends ofQlenn claim his election with equal boldness. |
