It provides ibr a chief magistrate and five selectmen, with autnuriiy lo try civil and criminal cases, attend to municipal affairs, and take charge of estates of deceased persorjB. Tho officers elected are Uuited States Collector Ball, chief magistrate, selectmen, P. Corcoran, T. Hallernan, N. E. Melropolsby, (Russian president) John Murphy, Thomas McCruley. No test of American citizenship is required except ex-cept white manhood as a qualification qualifica-tion for voters. Mining prospects are encouraging and prospecting active. Captain Heardsley, of tbe United States ship Jamestown, has dono much to restore order and confidence. George Jenkmson, toll collector at telegraph station sixteen, waa killed at Wrugel by an Indian while endeavoring endeavor-ing to stop a fight between the Indian aud a white man, named Morrison. The Iodiau was captured after a desperate reaiatance, iu which he received re-ceived a Severn wound. Dr Lindsley, of tho Presbyterian board of miaiions, has organized the firt American church in tbe territory of Alaska, at Wragel. A Koman Catholic church ia also erected and an industrial school going up. |
