A meeting of manufacturers, manu-facturers, merchants and citizens was held at the Grand Pacific hotel, this evening, to listen to an address by Fen. Cyrus Bussey, president of the New Orleans chamber of commerce, upon the subject of promoting American Ameri-can commerce. Judge Booth, Hon. John C Dore and Hon. Charles L. Caston made remarks, aud resolutions were adupted favoring Buch trans j continental cheap rates of railway transportation .as will develop our trade with China, India, Japan aud Australia. Such cheap rates can only be obtaiued by breaking down the preseut railway monopoly lothe Pacific coast and the completion of the Northern and Toxbb Paciho roads. The resolutions further recommend recom-mend speedy action by congress looking look-ing to that end; provide for a committee com-mittee of seven to give force to these purposes; favor the holding of an in- ! teruotional commercial convention here soon, to consider the extension ot our North and South American trude; fsivcr an extension of the steamship lines with foreign countries, by means of subsidies and mail contracts, and call for a general extension of water traffic by congressional legislation. |
