The committeo appoiuted by tho women of the I suilrage convention, held in thia city 'last week, consisting of Mrs. Gage, Mrs. Spencer, Mrs. Wells and Mrs. Williams, the two latter of Utah, called on the president this morniug, and presented a memorial and other papers in relation to female suffrage and charging tht the president bad i ignored the women ol the country in his annual message. They alto called the attenticu ol the presideuL to tho tecent decision of the eupreme court I relative to polygamous marriageB, ' aud to the efiect of enforciug the act of 1862, aud said it would make thousands of women outcasts aud their children illegitimate. The president said he was deeply impressed im-pressed by what had beeu siid.and re-1 re-1 queried Mrs. Williams and Mie. Well to make out statements in writing and submit tliem to him. He wanted all the information on tho subject he could procure. They promised to do this and the president then asked them how he could serve them. Tue- reply was: "By vetoing any bill to J enforce the act of 1S62." ' In answer to the memorial and remarks made in relation to Jemaie suffrage, the preaident said: "You say I have ignored the women of the country in my annual message. I will carelully consider what you havo said and the papers you have presented to me. In my next message I will act according ac-cording to the dictates ol my conscience con-science and the best light I have." j |
