Meetings siniiUr to the one proposed have been held in Great Britain, where some of tho leading membsrs iu the Church of England are among the auppurterd of the' movement, WLih has aseumed considerable con-siderable prnportiuno within the past few years. This being the first assembly of the kind ever held in this country, it is naturally attracting much attention, and its proceedings will be noted with deep interest. The Christian churches have long practically prac-tically disregarded the doctrine of CuriatTa second coniirjg iu person, and it is to revive this faith and lo set forth the ground of hope which inspires them tlmt tho ministerial gentlemen havo called the convention, as we'l ae to give mutml encouragement and support to each other in maintaining what they believe, and what strict interpretation of church rules teaches is a vital truth. The call seta forth that in the scriptures the coming ia ' strongly and constantly emphasized as a peraunal and imminent event, the griMt olject of the church's hope, thu powerful niDtive to holy living and watch nil service, and the inspiring ground of coi lUenco amid the EorruWH and aius of the present evil worl.i." The ministerial gentlemen gentle-men observing that the doctrine has fallen into ui gleet and suffered reproach, re-proach, ihey held it to be a duty to revive m.d reaffirm it, and labjr with all their power to restore it to the apprehei aiou and acceptance ol Christian people. It ia interesting to note the different views held upon this subject, and to observe how the world h'.s tt rayed away from or ;ftaulji:uJ uia vital doctrine of Christ's tecond coming, thai was eo vividly aud vigorously set foith among tho doctrines of the early church. The views cf the clergy are scarcely less varied in the matter than taoc of the mas-cs. tfoiue ministers teach that Christ's coming means simply the death o: thu believer, while others speak of it aa tho difiusion of CbrUtiaivty, on the theory that when tho duct.ii.es aud. word ol the Savior ehall have become universal throughout tho world, the true interpret jlion of toe a.I?e:.t of Christ aa spoken of iu the scriptures will be given, sni t jo predicted c.m-irg c.m-irg fu.tiiitd; but t.ie m-jurityof the C:u-:st :iu wi. i'd, whatever they m.iy nrciV-s iu the matier, actuary regard the evci.t in toe lighl of a vng ie, ia-comprci'.cuiblo, ia-comprci'.cuiblo, yet mysU'riously fdSCLiiaiitig dream, never to L3 real- iz2d.
