The senate received, re-ceived, to day, from tho secretary of the treasury, in response to Sauls-bury Sauls-bury 'a resolution of the 24th of January, detailed information regarding re-garding the refunding of United States bonds from the year 1862 to the present time. Thesecietary gives the history of various contracts, with syndicates, etc, and says: In no case haa the publio money been delivered to any parties upon collateral brother-wise. brother-wise. I am alto pleased to state that after paying the compensations and expenses of issues so far aa can be ascertained to date, there remains in the treasury unexpended of the amount allowed by law, $G37,819. No favors have been shown any of the subscribing parties. I have the honor to suggest that if tho senate deem the matter of sufficient importance, a committee ba authorized to examine into the method employed by the treasury in refunding tho debt, to the end that any exiting methods not deomed proper or expedient may be abandoned and better schemes devised. I shaii also be pleased to consult with any member of the senate who may have any suggestions to ofier in the matter, and to open to hia inspection all books and records of the depart meut showing in detail the transactions transac-tions in tho issue and redemption of the public debt. |
