Show f&llllcu; Clipper Rusiijcss Ni w York, IS. Tho clipper freight market showa no signs of improve-meut. improve-meut. On tbe contrary, there ia every appearance of prolonged dullness dull-ness consequent upon tho tflorla of the managers of the Pacific railroads who are each day addina to their lisi of contracting abippsis and who aro drawn from those who heretofore have been exclusive pairousof clipper lines. The railroads now number over 400 contracting shippers. In addition to these they are daily making contracts with others to ship exclusively by steamer such freight as does not interfere with their contractors con-tractors and which could not stand overland charges at nearly thn same , rales s charged by clippers. This is , done in order to delay tbo departure: of clippers, thus materially aiding the' railroads in their project and giving additions to their overland list. That one of the lines via Cape Horn will eventually be "frozen out," there is no question, and it is only a matter of a few mouthy. Tbo Pacific roads have gone into this business understanding, under-standing, and intend to control it, and it waB fcr this that they renewed the contract with the Pacific Mail company. |
