Show GliNFRAL GAKFIELD'S IDEA OF A Good Newspapki; UeneralGarli-ild's idea of a good newspaper, as given in an addrejs before the Oaio editors; "The first and most important duty of the journalist is to furnish the newt-; but not every occurrence is worthy of the name. I know that tne seller of news, like ether merchants, must try to furnish the warrs which his customers want; but if he wishes to be an educator of society, he must seek to furnish the record ol sucli events as will instruct the community, com-munity, provoke thought and awaken the belter aspirations of men. It U one cf the most hopeful signs of our I nu realism that tho papers which have achieved tha most permanent success are those which have estab lished" a reputation for trus'.worthi uess aud accuracy in their statement of facts. I can name a fjw papers that are taken by men of both political parties solely on account o! the great variety and accuracy of tneir news. I venture the assertion that if t record could be sept oi those portions of our papers which are most sought for by readers, it would be found that iho telegraphic di-pitcbed and the items of neighborhood news arc read by twice the number who read the editorial comments. If half the intelligence and culture which is now expended upon the editorial p;tge were applied to the careful observa tion of current events, it wouid :idd immensely to the value of our news paper-." |
