Show A letter from judge gunnell gennell ogden utah april 2 1913 editor clipper bountiful bath dear mr stable I 1 have seen a copy of the davis county clipper of march in which is an appreciation of your humble servant and his services as judge of the juvenile court I 1 feel that it is not out of place and not in the least improper for me to express my appreciation and thanks for your kind words the country settlements and small towns give but little occasion for visits of the judge I 1 am glad to say it has always been IL a pleasure for me to go into your town and neighborhood and the same as to the other parts of davis county and I 1 believe that all the people that actually observed and became acquainted with what we accomplished upon such visits spoke favorably and encouragingly of our efforts mr W W rose as probation officer and mr air horace van fleet as such officer recently have accomplished complis hed a great amount of good in their visits to various district s in that county they a always went promptly when notified that there was something that required attention I 1 was always ready and glad togo to go into that county to give formal or informal attention to juvenile matters as occasion arose we have tried to teach the people how to use the juvenile court and how beneti beneficial cial it is to give the officers and the judge information and a chance to correct bad conduct on the part of the young people acarl nearly adlof all of the cases and mat arising in that county as is the fact regarding all localities as for that matter were such as called for instruction advice guidance rather than punishment in ent and so my chief labor there has bais been putting it up to those who showed disposition to err and do wrong wilfully or dama damage d others through reckless or careless ways to change their ways and disposition and I 1 believe that beneficial change bras baa mear 1 v always resulted many people fall fail to taca what aliat the juvenile court is what it is for the limitations under the law regarding the powers over children and parental rights or that the conscience and judgment of the judge must base action u upon pon the paramount and controlling idea that the future usefulness of the child as as an adult citizen is the chief end of all effort you publish a good interesting and useful paper and I 1 wish it had entrance into every home in that county I 1 always insist that parents supply their children with plenty of reading matter as a means of keeping them at home yours truly volney O C grunnell |
