Show SHERMAN SATISFIED, Willi Cnmcron as II end ol the Kepubllcau Committee. Chicago, 18. The Tribune's Washington Wash-ington correspondent called up Secretary Secre-tary fcherman, thia evening, and found him unconcerned, with regard to the proceedings of tho national committee, as if his own name never bad been mentioned men-tioned in connection with the possible candidacy for the presidency. In reply lo an enquiry as to the political significance signifi-cance of tho election of Senator Cameron to tho chairmanship, tho secretary said in his opinion it had none whatever. The senator, he said, had been chosen by a small majority and the selection was an eminently wise one. Ho thought bis majority would havo been larger if it had ' not been given out that Cameron was a Grant man, and Bought tbo position on that basis alone. The fact is. tbo secretary secre-tary said, that tho senator had doubtless been chosen because he was knowo to bo a man of character and energy. He is, continued the secretary, a friend of Grant's and a friend of Blaine's. I know ho is my friend, I ioally don't know which Eida thoy placed ma on, but I favored Cameron's selection, because I knew him to be a man of action and sagacity. |
