VlLLIiM3, representative in cougrebu from the Detroit (Mich.) district, died at his reeidenco in Washington yesterday morniDg, alter on illness of eome weeks, though he bad been confined to his room only a few days. General Williama was well known in thia city, whero ho had many friends. He waa also interested in mining property in this territory, and made two or three iaita to this city, the last in the autumn of 1877. lie was iv member of tho Forty-fourth and Forty-6lth Congresses, and in tho present congress con-gress was tho only democratic representative repre-sentative from Michigan. He was alao a candidate for the Forty -3ixth Congress, and received Ino regular democratic nomination, but was defeated de-feated at the polls by John S. Newberry, New-berry, republican. General Williama was in tho war, and gained aomo notoriety as a brave and efficient officer. Ho was a moderately able statesman, but shone brightest as a man of sterling houeUy and integrity. I |
