Show . TOASniNUTOSl. Washington, 12. The House of Representatives settled down to business busi-ness in eaineBt, tc-day, and besides devoting Borne time to miscellaneous matters, passed two of tbe regular annual appropriation bills. This exhibition ex-hibition of working activity on the part of the dominant party in the House is noted with Bpecial gratification gratifica-tion by the friends of Speaker Randall, Ran-dall, between whom and Senator Bayard Bay-ard a contest in the presidential race, so far aa congressional democratic support ia concerned, appears now to be clearly defined. Bayard believes in putting the financial question in ! the front of all others and of pushing il vigorously, in behalf of what he and a great mass of his $o.:tj in tbe east denominate honeat money. Speaker Randall's policy is to ignore Lhe fioanoial question altogether for the present and win the good opinion of the country by cutting doftn appropriations and by making the session a ahoit one. The republicans re-publicans in Congress are, aa ytt, very auiet concerning the presidential plans, but it ia charged by some of of Secretary Sherman's friends that the one controlling motive of the very general agreement among republican politicians in Congresa to avoid all financial agitation, ia a fear tbat the diacussions of financial topics would keep Sherman too prominently before the people, because these friends ol the eeoretary argue that he has conducted con-ducted the finanoial affairs of government govern-ment bo wisely and successfully that his name comes firtt to mind whenever when-ever euch questions are diaoussed. Superintendent Walker, in view of the great extent of California and other difficulties that will be involved iu taking the census of that slate by only three Bupervisora, is endeavoring to arrange for dividing it into four districts. Thia will not be possible, however, unless he also diminishes the number for Massachusette, the only other state not yet permanently divided. A decision will probably bo reached in the matter next week. Governor Ramsey, tbe new secretary secre-tary of war, totk charge ol his department de-partment to-day, and quickly made a pleasant impression upon all who were brought into contact with him. He is a portly and good natured, but keen -wittsd gentlemaD, with gray bair and gold-rimmed spectacles. He has leated tbe fine mansion formerly for-merly ocoupied by Postmaster-General Oreaswell, and hia family will take possession of it to - morrow. The Evening Star reports that one of )Ls etafj, who called on him today, to-day, remarked that in the east the new secretary waa generally understood under-stood to bo "down on the Indiana." Secretary Ramsay is reported to have replied that his section was by do means hostile to the Indiana, or dis posed to act with malignant feehnga towards them. They had suflered a great deal by the Indians, and it was true that they might regard the red man in a Bomewhat diflereut light than the people of the east do. This was natural, for they understood him better. They did net think it possible to make a white man of the Indian, and while treating him fairly, they held Lhat he should also be dealt with firmly. Tho House, to day, passed bills to remrtva the political disabilities from W. R. Butt, of California, and Abner 8mead, ol Oregon. Secretary Schurz, this alternoon, received a telegram from Gen. Hatch, dated Loa Pinos, IGLh, Blating the Indiana, In-diana, in their request to be tried in Washington, meaut to be tried by the general government. They are willing wil-ling to be tried anywhere out of Colorado. Colo-rado. They ttatsd, through Ouray, that they might as well lie bung to the trees at the agency as to be tatien to Denver. Ouray eaya that the commission has demanded all the warriors mentioned by the women, but that the women made eome mistakes, whicb will be known at the trial, but that the proper persons will be secured and turned over as soon as it is ascertained who they ore. They will turn over all persons mentioned by the women. |
