The chairman examined Blackburn, who testified that he had never Bpoken to St. Martin in his life, except, perhaps, to say good-day. ..Ho had never seen him talking with Stecger and had never beard that a large number of witnesses were kept in clo o quarters quar-ters by him and Weber. Stenger testified that the first time be saw Weber waa iu the committee room at New Orleane; never eaw St. Martin until he wft3 appointed; believed ho was appointed at the Biiggeation of Weber, who recommed?d him as one who knew where to find witnesses; never had any conversation with Maddox and did not speak to Cartor until the committeo returned to i Washington. The chairman observed ob-served that tho alleged conversation between Stengor and St. Martin could not have taken place on the dates given. Hisecck asked if this part of the : inquiry was closed, The chairman answered in the negative, and asked lor a Bbort secret session to consider tho resolution otlered by Stenger, and to the details connected with tho appointment of a sub-committee to proceed lo New York. The Eub committee will leave Washington on Sunday night and commence taking testimony on Mon day afternoon. Their meetings will be held in the post office building. Among the first witnesses to he called, are Marble.Pelton and Weed. Mr. Til-den Til-den will also be called upon to (eatify. At present the committee seem to have no inclination to pass a special resolution that ho be allowed to have counsel present to adviae with upon his testimony. The resolution in favor of bringing back Anderson to the stand is indefinitely tabled, and j is not likely to be heard of again. The Bub-committee will be away: about tec or hi teen daya. It is understood under-stood that little will be done by the com mittee at Washington baf jre their return. |
