Show RULES FOR SPELLING. Just now the following "Rules for Spelliug," published by the Journal oj Education, will interest many. Rule 1. All monosyllables ending in 1, with a single vowel before it, have double 1 at the close; mil, sell. Rule 2. All monosyllables ending in 1, with a douMe vowel before it, have one 1 at the close; wail, sail. Rule 3. Monosyllables ending in I, when compounded, retain but one 1 each; as fuifil, skilful. Rule 4. All words of more thaii one syllable, ending in 1, have only one I in tho close; as faithful, delightful: delight-ful: except recafl, befall, unwell, etc. Rule 5. All derivations from wordy ending in 1 have one 1 only; as equality, equal-ity, from equal; fulness, from full: except they end in cr, or ill; ns mill, miller; full, luller. Rule G. Ail participles ending in ing, from words ending in e, lose the e final; as have, having; amuse, amusing; except they come from verbs ending in double e, and then they retain both; as see, seeing; agree, agreeing. Rule 7. All vorbs ending in ly, and nouns in mout, retain the final oi their primitives; as brave, bravely; refinement; except judgment, acknowledgment. ac-knowledgment.
