Show Rival oflbo Pacific Mail Com-omanj. Com-omanj. New Y'ork, 11. The latest phase of the controversy between the Pacific Mail Company and the transcontin- fj ental railroad, is a rumored combination combin-ation embracing the railroads between Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore and San Francisco for a new and powerful line of steamships on the Pacific to. run ex-luaively in the interests in-terests of" the railroads and their European connections. The name 1 of Gov. Leland Stanford hits been I prominently mentioned in connection with the contemplated enterprise. The Governor says if the negotiations pending were successfully concluded he thought it very likely he would visit Europe to make arrangements for the purchase of vessels. Ktiasel J Sage, President of the Pacific Mail Company, ex pressed n gret at the present pres-ent competition between the Pacinc Mail Company and Pacific railroads, ' which he said was injuring all parties. He claimed the Pacific Mail Com- , pany was willing to do anything to 1 put an end to tuc existing difficulties, lie attached little importance to reports re-ports in regard to tlie eaublishment uf a rival line. If the railroads attempted at-tempted anything of the kind they could be at once enjoined for violation of their charter. It was quite likely, however, that Govermor Stamford and others would try to establisn a line in connection with the Pacific Railroad. |
