The Cabinet were unanimous in nominating him, but the President is not much interested, and will use no special means to secure hisjconfii mation. There has been no nomination nomina-tion made for years regarding which Senators have been so free to express their views. The common objection is on political grounds. The following follow-ing Republican Senators aro opposed to Cushing: Alcorn, Allison, Brown-low, Brown-low, Buckingham, Cameron, Carpenter, Carpen-ter, Chandler, Clayton, Crazier, l)or-sey, l)or-sey, Edmunds, Perry of Michigan, Ferry oi Connecticut, Frelinghuysen, Gilbert, Hitchcock, Howe, Logan, Mitchell, Morrill of Maine, Morrill, of Vermont, Morton, Oglesby, Pratt, Ramsey, Sargent, Scott, Shermnn, West, Windom and Wright. There are besides these eight" or ten not seen to-day who are counted opposed. Among these are Ingalls, Lewis, Patterson, Pat-terson, Sprague, Cragin and Wad-leigh. Wad-leigh. The Democrats aro almost if not quite unanimous for the confirmation. confir-mation. Of tho Liberals, Schurz.Tip-ton Schurz.Tip-ton are believed to be opposed. The Southern Republicans are opposed chiclly on account of the support Mr. dishing gave in the Dred Scott decision. de-cision. It is certain that in no way can he he confirmed with the assistance assist-ance of the majority of the Republican Republi-can vote. In regard to Sumner's support of Cushing, the Chronicle says: "In all that has made Sumner's career as a 1 Statesman immortal, Mr.Cushing has been his antipode. Sumner has ever been on the side of the oppressed and groaning slave, and Cushing as steadily on the side of the slave-masters. Their clanking chains wrung and anguish his heart with deepest grief. 'To the ear of Cushing the ring of the slaves' shackles have only drawn out that Roman virtue shadowed shad-owed forth in the Dred Scott decision. Mr. Sumner's Civil Rights bill will be worthless as blank paper unless its constitutionality shall be sustained by the Supremo Court of the United Suites; and to sustain its validity Mr. Cushing would havo to go back on the rccoid of a somewhat protracted life time. Will Mr. Senator Sumner obliterate ob-literate his glorious record by aiding to make dishing Chief Justice ?" |
