The commissioner commis-sioner of internal revenue, in his Biip-plimentary Biip-plimentary report, gives the following figures and comparisons ns ngairmt saving banks, &ic. During May last, the aggregate amount of capital hold by these banks and bankers, not national, na-tional, was $200,310,008, while the deposits wore $1 ,340,014,813; amount of taxable capital and depositsduring I the aix months previous to May, 1875, only $780,404,076, whilo tho doponits! wero $1,140,000,000. Tins taxation was unequally distributed. California, compared with Maetraeliunetla, ia ten to one; Michigan with Massachusetts, sixteen to one; Virginia with Vor-mont, Vor-mont, fivo to one; Now York city with ninety million less taxable capital capi-tal and deposits, than that of Maine, Now Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts Massa-chusetts and Connecticut, combined, pays a tax three times as great um theso states, while tho same statoH having a capital and deposits three times an groat as California, pays about ono half thu tax sho does. |
