Show The Column Tcudome. Par.'s, 31. The Journal OjTu-Ld gives an account of the reconstruction of the Vendome Column, which, with the exception of Napoleon's statute, is now all but completed. Most of the bronze plates having been broken or twiattd, they bad to be recast or restored re-stored to their proper shape, and every plate had to be fitted separately several times to procure a perfect ad-jusiment ad-jusiment with the Btone forming the body of the column. Unsuspected fractures were frequently discovered in the course of the work. In ft few days nothing will remain to bo done but clearing, and by the middlo of November it is expected that the scaffolding scaf-folding will be removed. It had been hoped that the statue ndmilled of repairing, re-pairing, but careful examination shows ll.-t to rpcast it was indi.-pen.-a-ble. Happily M. Dun ont has a h:;lf-size h:;lf-size model in his studio v.hicu will enable a model of proper size to be constructed, aud the .statue will be placed tn the summit by the simple means employed in 1S63", without the necessity of scaffold i tip. The Journal does not state when this crowning ol the edifice is likely to be accomplished, accomplish-ed, and there is a rumor that it will be deferred for another year through a fear of exciting some political demons de-mons t ration. |
