Show M'nMiliitoii Advices. Washington, 9. The President, to-day, nominated Caleb Cushing to he Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Several members of the appropriation appropria-tion committee think the estimate will be brought down to about $10,-000,000. $10,-000,000. Tide will not be sufficient to bring the expenditures within the receipts for tho next fiscal year; therefore some'measures for the treas- ! ury relief will be necessary. The House committee on post roads and canals, this morning, further fur-ther considered Murray's bill to regulate regu-late commerce on railroads among the States, and favorably disposed of five of its fourteen sections. The 4th section proscribing the powers of the board of ntiib commissioners, was amended to amplify their powers and prescribe a longer term lor holding oilice than two years. The trustees of the Washington National Monument fund, at a meeting meet-ing yesterday, appointed a committee to take charge of the interests of the association before Congress, with a view to immediate action on the House report of 1872, in which an appropriation of $-00,000 to aid the, completion of the monument was' recommended. The Secretary of War was again before the House military committee in further explanation of his views on the proposed reduction of the rank and tile of the army. He agrees with Gen. Sherman, and other high military mili-tary authorities, in deeming any BUch reduction unwise. The Commissioner of Internal Revenue Rev-enue is much encouraged by the receipts re-ceipts of his bureau so far this month. They are three millions, and the pros-jpeets pros-jpeets are they will soon, be restored to what they were before the late panic. |
