Show Opera Comique. The audience at tho theatre last night was not so large as it had been during the week, slid the house was a more Ihim ordinarily gocd one. "Les Bayards'" was performed with a good deal of vim and spirit but thore is little if any real merit io tho opera. It is an insipid production which wearied the audienco long before be-fore the curtain fell. Mrs. Oates, by her charming sprightline.ss, aud laughing good nature, carried the opera along, and thus gave some life to what would otherwiso have been a vapid, tedious performance. Mr. W. II. Wood field, who impersonated the chattering wife Beatrice, created some amusement; uot, however, from the text of tho part. Had a lady artist been in the character, Beatrice, would hava been as devoid of comicality comi-cality as were the other parts. The audience, however, lost nothing no-thing by being present last night, lor Mrs. Oates sang "Sweetheart, Good Bye." Nothing that this lady has sung during her brief stay among us has so completely charmed her audience. au-dience. Every one was fairly enraptured, enrap-tured, and could not be satisfied with a singlo encore. Mrs. Oates company leave the city this morning for the 01st. They have had a very successful week '3 business, and go away, wo trust, with a good impression of Salt Like people. |
