Show I The Cnmidlan Fisheries. Chicago, 21. A Washington dispatch dis-patch states that a new mixed commission com-mission is about to assemble at Halifax, Hali-fax, N. S., for the purpose of settling . the vexed question of the Canadian . fisheries. It will bo composed of Sir . A. T. Gait, on tho part of Great , Hnttiin, ex-Lieutenant Gov, Clifford, I of Massachusetts, and another mem-l mem-l ber to be appointed by the Austrian ambassador at London. The Amer-, Amer-, ican listiermon claim the right under the reciprocity treaty with Great Briiian of taking, curing and drying fish in the waters of tho Canadian dominion, without being restricted . to any particular distance from the shore, with permission lo land to dry their fish, make purchases, etc., which is precisely the right enjoyed by the Canadian fishermen in our wate:s. The Canadian government, however, con tee ts this American demand, de-mand, and hs passed stringent laws against our fishermen in their waters. The Ai.ierican joint high commission suggested that the United States might be willing to pay $1,000,000 for the privilege of fishing forever iu the Canadian waters, but the British members deemed tho sum entirely inadequate. The Americans replied they did not regard the privilege as valuable, but that the United Slates wanted it because it was desirable to remove all causes of irritation between be-tween the two countries. |
