An engine on the Erie railway exploded its boiler this evening, killing engineer Waller, fireman Stevenson, and a flagman, name unknown. .Iowa City, Ia., 23. At 9 p.m. today to-day one of the cooling tanks in Close Sons' paper mill exploded, caueing ! the explosion of four others. Six workmen were killed. Walter Linton, Lin-ton, who was over the exploded tank, . was seen to go up with the tank to an estimated height of 500 feet, and falling went through the roof of a point shop 70 yards from tho mill. He was found lying on the floor of the room beneath. It is decided that it was a chemical explosion. Loss, $i50,000. Cincinnati, 23. Newark, O., specials say twenty two persons, ol which number sixteen were boys, were badly burned yesterday by an explosion. A test was to be made of afire extinguisher, and a building had been erected by consent of the city council, which was to be fired for the occasion. It was thoroughly saturated with coal oil, and during the preparations prematurely took fire and an explosion ensued. |
