I Salt Lake City, Juue -i1, 17 I. t Editors Xatt Luke Herald: While zreat Dolitical Questions arc agitating the public mind, and financial finan-cial panics are shaking the country from centre to circumiereuce, there are matters of social economy which should interest the citiens of this Territory, and which might be profitably considered by the community, com-munity, at present. Among these are the manufacture of many articles of domestic utility, such :w brooms, molasses, pickles, etc., and tbc can-uing can-uing of vegetables, fruit and jeilies. There is an annual importation of at- least forty thousand dollars worth of brooms, twenty thousand dollars worth of molasses, eight thousand dollars worth of common pickles &uch as cucumbers, besides English and American brands amc uuliug to twelve thousand dollars more; about five thousand dollars worth of canntd fruit; eight thousand dollars worth of canned vegetables, four thousand dollars dol-lars worth of jellies, besides other articles whicii might be men-tioucd men-tioucd with propriety. These form an aggregate of umeiy-jeven umeiy-jeven thousand dollars, for articles which might .just as well be produced in this Territory, and thus afford labor to many who are complaining for the want of employment, to nothing of the improvement which might oc made in the quality of the articles thus produced over those imported. im-ported. Many of the eauibles mentioned men-tioned are grossly adulterated, rnd even poisonous ingredients are in many instances introduced, in vino-gar, vino-gar, in jellies, and in almost cvry form docs the public stiller through patronizing foreign importations. Wholesale dealers are willing to purchase home productions, and it standi! tho producing population in hand to furnish as good an article as possible and at .-.uch a price as shall induce a continuation of patronage, always v: membcrim; to protect tue merchants who handle these goods and not stock the retail market at wholesale prices, thus ds'.'0 iug the margin which should pay for handling hand-ling and warrant the outlay oi the means.
