Show Tho Earl of Derby Toasted. London, 7. The mayor of Liverpool Liver-pool gave a banquet to the earl ol Derby, to-night. Lord Derby, in response re-sponse to a toast, expressed the opinion opin-ion that the insurrectionary difficulties difficul-ties in Turkey had been exaggerated; said the great powers were not disposed dis-posed to aid the insurgents; it would be impolitic to concede Bclf govern-ment govern-ment to Herzegovina; judicious reforms re-forms ni'ght alleviate discontent, though a radical cure could not be expected. He said no further intelligence intelli-gence was received from Peking. Everyone must deprecate war, while honorably avoidable. It was necessary, neces-sary, however, to insist on just and moderate demands, and not shirk our duty becauso it was unpleasant. If trouble did arise, the fault would not be oura. |
