Show Fire Alarms. It has not bctn generally understood, under-stood, wo believe, that there are certain cer-tain alarms rung, or ought to be, on occasions of nre, indicating the location loca-tion of a conliagration, and for the purpose of posting those who do not know we give the signals as tho bell-ringer bell-ringer is supposed to give them when ringing an alarm : When the fire is in the north, one stroke of the bell-tongue bell-tongue is the signal, of course the one stroke is repeated until the alarm is thoroughly sounded; when in the south, two strokes; in the east, three, and when in the western part of the cily from the City Hall, four strokes are given. For the intermediate points of the compass tho signals nre: Onestroko immediately followed by four in rapid succession fur the northwest; north-west; one and three fur the northeast; two and three for the southeast, aud two and four for the southwest. So that, if the individual ringing the alarm does so correctly and according to the adopted rule of the Fire Department, De-partment, those who are anxious to assist in extinguishing flamea, saving life and property can "hear and, run." |
