Show lue Chattanooga Convention. Chattanooga, 14. After the opening open-ing of the convention this morning Committee on Correspondence read several communications, among them a letter from ex-Governor Davis, ot Texas, which declares that the same spirit now actuates southern whites as in 1660-61, and that a new rebellion rebel-lion is forming. He says that though Kellogg and Moses might be corrupt, he would not believe it on the statement state-ment of Democrats. Statements of illiteracity in the Southern States were read to show the necessity for Congress to provide for education. 1 A resolution ollered by Davie, of Georgia, endorsing the civil rights bill, and denying the truth ofA. H. Stevens' assertion that the colored people didn't wish it, was referred to the committee on resolutions. The committee on schools, consisting of one from each State, was appropriated. appropri-ated. A motion to increase the number num-ber of the committee which is collecting collect-ing facts of outrages in the South was adopted. Recess. Lpon reassembling further time was granted the committee on facts and statistics to make their report, and the committee was continued indefinitely in-definitely and instructed to report to Congress every three months. A motion was adopted to appoint a committee to meet in Washington on the first Monday of the coming December, and to call a convention ii deemed necessary. The report was amended to call for details of outrages on December 1st. The committee on resolutions declare that Republican Repub-lican citizens of reconstructed States recognize ihe equality of all men be-, fore tho law. The resolutions reaffirm the Philadelphia pUtforai, demand equal rights and federal legislature in sustaining law and order; endorse the President's action in Louisiana; denounce the Democrats in the South for. sustaining the KuKlux; deprecate the drawing of race and color lines; recommend more faithful faith-ful and honest ofiictals; urge the appropriation of public lands for educational purposes. |
